Elderly man killed riding his bicycle in Norwalk collision

Evidently, the driver had nothing to do with it.

According to the Whittier Daily News, a man described only as a Latino in his 80s was killed when he was struck by a sedan in Norwalk this morning.

The collision occurred at 7:46 this morning at Mapledale Street and Claressa Avenue. He died at the scene.

It’s only in the last sentence of the article that the driver was even mentioned. And then only to say he or she was not arrested.

A street view shows two quiet, residential streets with no lane markings, which should have a 25 mph speed limit.

Normally a crash at that speed should have been survivable, but someone of that age is likely to be more fragile than a younger person would be.

This is at least the 15th bicycling fatality in Southern California this year, and the seventh in Los Angeles County.

My deepest sympathy and prayers for the victim and his loved ones.

Thanks to Megan Lynch for the heads-up.

when im riding my bike and something is in the path of my bike…. I stop. i do that cause i ride at a safe speed and am in control of my bike. my safe speed is not determined by a sign saying max speed 25 mph. if something becomes a hazard i dont want to hit it at max speed so i slow down, make a safe pass and when clear to do so travel at the posted speed limit. I do not understand how police can determine the driver not at fault… the driver was not driving a safe speed. if he was he would not have hit him. the driver and the police involved do not understand the responsibility of control and should not have a badge or a drivers lic. max speed is not a safe speed unless it is safe to do so. long open road… no parked cars.. no pedestrians in the area … no blind areas that someone can pop out… thats safe to do the max speed limit. cars parked like a train … pedestrians walking about near the path of travel… intersections or blind areas that hide unknown risk…. not safe to do the max speed… Im glad someone was smart enough to invent brakes… i just wish people were smart enough to figure out how to use them…. sorry about my rant… i have been hit by 6 hit and run drivers and am now disabled. 50,000 miles peddled and im still peddling… (with a peddled assist electric bike.)
