TranspoComm takes up Wilshire BOL; NoCal driver witnesses solo bike collision she may have caused

The City Council Transportation Committee takes up the Wilshire Blvd Bus Only Lane — aka Bus Rapid Transit or BRT lane — on Wednesday.

Writing for HuffPo, Joel Epstein says a Wilshire without bus lanes is no longer acceptable.

As I’ve stated before, anyone who has taken the 720 bus from the Westside to Downtown knows how desperately this is needed. Not to mention that it will make cycling safer by sharing the new, smooth pavement that would be installed with riders, who are legally allowed to ride in the bus lane.

Wealthy residents of Brentwood and the Westwood’s multi-million dollar Wilshire Corridor are up in arms about allotting a full lane of traffic to a form of transportation they would never lower themselves to use. But traffic-choked Wilshire Blvd is only going to get worse until something is done to get people out of their cars and onto other forms of transportation, making more room for their Bentleys and Beemers.

And it’s not like we’re going to see the long-promised Subway to the Sea anytime soon.

Establishing the BOL for the full 7.7 mile route recommended by Metro is a vital first step in turning around the ever-worsening situation on our streets, as well as ending L.A.’s infamous car culture Councilmember Bill Rosendahl famously proclaimed more than a year ago.

Now it’s time to turn his bold words into real changes on our streets.


Courtesy of Witch on a Bicycle comes this story of a NorCal woman who sees a cyclist riding in a bike lane, in full control of her bike.

Then less than 100 feet after she passes him, watches in her rearview mirror as the rider wobbles, loses control and suffers a severe brain injury in what’s described as a solo bike accident.

Anyone want to guess what’s wrong with this picture?

Yes, it’s possible that it was a total coincidence. The rider, Richard Kadet, could have simply lost control of his bike on a fast descent and fallen all on his own.

Possible, but highly unlikely given the circumstances. Far more likely is that the witness passed too close, causing Kadet’s fall, whether from the effects of the vehicle’s slipstream or over-reaction by a startled rider.

Just more evidence that it’s possible to pass a cyclist safely without passing safely. And that many police still don’t understand what causes bike collisions.

And one more reason why we need a minimum three-foot passing law to let drivers know how close is too close.

Maybe it’s time to let Disney — ESPN’s parent company — know that we don’t want their employees encouraging people to kill or injure people on bikes.

Then again, idiotic shock jocks aren’t just an American phenomenon

    In a very slight defense of the NoCal woman (I haven’t read the full article as I’m on deadline but needed my BikingInLA fix), I’ve crashed before when someone was passing me without them having a thing to do with it – that was due to a slipped chain throwing me while I was sprinting – a guy on a motorbike who had just passed me came back around to check whether he had anything to do with it, which he didn’t.

      I’d be the first to admit that the wreck could have had nothing to do with the passing driver; I just think it looks awfully suspicious, and should be one of the first thoughts that would occur to an investigator, just as it would a cyclist.

      • I know Woodside Road (where Kadet crashed) well – it’s along a very popular cycling route just five miles from my office in Menlo Park. The road is wide, fairly smooth and bike laned, but you know as well as anybody that a cyclist can hit a branch or rock or other debris and go from “in control” to down and out in just an instant, especially on the fast downhill that Kadet rode down.

        The San Mateo County Sheriff’s office that investigated this crash is notorious in the Bay Area for their anti-cyclist bias, and you’re right, the driver could have caused the crash with a close pass, but honestly that seems unlikely to me.

  2. As for the bus lanes, the opposition is plenty stupid and completely unconsidered. According to LADOT’s Kang Hu, who actually studied the corridor, the Rapid buses carry MORE passengers down Wilshire at rush hour than do all the cars put together: 29,000 versus 24,000…over 20% more!

    So why should we favor inefficient cars over efficient buses? Streets aren’t free; we should use them well.

    And besides, if the buses could move along faster and more smoothly, even more people would ride them, and there would be fewer cars in each other’s way on Wilshire.

    That, plus the capacity added by having a place on Wilshire where cyclists would feel comfortable riding, giving yet more people the opportunity to opt out of driving.

    Guess the folks in Condo Canyon have more money than brains….

    Your link implies that SB910 is a 3-foot passing law. It is not: as long as the driver is moving less than 15mph faster than the cyclist, they are allowed to pass at any distance. Since you seem to continue to support this bill as amended, could you please explain why? Because I am mystified. I envision drivers buzzing me at 15mph relative, knocking me over, and then some dumb cop saying, “He was going slow enough, his pass was legal.”

      As I have said many, many, many times, I support this measure, with the removal of the 15 mph exemption. That’s what I’ve conveyed to CalBike, and what I’ve requested of my legislators.

        I wish I had some sort of confidence that the exemption would be removed.

        • @Joe (et al) the 15 MPH provision was put in for urban environments, where the traffic flow can be a little more ad hoc than traffic engineers might prefer. Not saying I support it (and I’m honestly undecided on the 15 MPH differential), but that’s the rationale.
