Once again, an overly simplistic misinterpretation threatens LA’s new mobility plan.
The Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council is scheduled to discuss the plan tonight at their 6:30 pm meeting in the auditorium of the Sherman Oaks, 14750 Dickens Street.
Maybe someone could remind them, as we keep repeating, that those estimates are a worst-case scenario, assuming no one takes advantage opportunity created by the new bus and bike ways and safer sidewalks created by the plan to leave their cars at home.
And that by providing people with viable alternatives, we could actually see a reduction in motor vehicle traffic, resulting in less, not more, congestion.
Of course, all that is clearly explained in the plan itself.
But why bother with the facts — or actually reading the damn thing — when it’s so much fun to fly off in a doomsday panic over a plan designed to ease LA’s traffic choked future?
After all, the city is already gridlocked to a large extent. And continuing on the same auto-centric course only guarantees things will continue to get worse.

Because it’s cars that have killed the vitality of our city.
And it’s long past time we took it back.

If you follow BikinginLA on Twitter, you’ve no doubt noticed the daily drumbeat of stolen bikes; sometimes several a day. And those are just the ones reported to the Bike Index stolen bike database, which is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to bikes taken in the LA area.
So like the notice says, keep your bike inside if at all possible. If not, lock it securely to something solid and immovable.
And make sure you register it now to ensure you have all the information you’ll need if anything does happens to it.

It’s become harder for thieves to steal bikes in volume from outside racks in West LA cities because most people are using U-Locks or bringing them inside after years of learning their lessons getting bikes stolen.
Bike theft and parting is a multi-million dollar industry where bikes are parted out and parts shipped to other countries if they are not sold locally on Craig’s List. Thieves need a continuing supply line so they have been stealing from inside gated areas of apartments and condos where residents have a false sense of security and use thinner cable locks to secure their bikes. It’s easy and fast to cut those cables. Most complexes don’t have video surveillance.
Another location thieves are turning more and more to over the past couple of years are bike clubs that take a break at a coffee shop and just leave their carbons leaning up against a wall while they go inside without affirmatively instructing someone to watch their bike.
Why do you need someone to watch your bike with all these riders around? It’s because the thief will be sitting around outside in full road bike gear, bib, helmet, etc. sipping a coffee. When he spots his prey, the rider that just plops their bike down and runs inside, he picks it up and is off.
Such has happened to the unfortunate owners of 5000 bikes in nice areas at the Starbucks in Palos Verdes, and Starbucks in Irvine, Newport Beach, etc., etc, etc. Police even with video, can’t identify the thief because HE HAS A HELMET AND CYCLING GLASSES ON. It can be your neighbor with the Bianchi.
So maybe there needs to be a PSA on “Do Not Leave Your Bike Unattended!”
As much as a tell people in apartments–some just don’t get it. They tell me, “Who is going to come into my garage just to steal a bike with all these expensive cars around much more valuable to take?”
