Commenting on the price of the cyclist’s bike is inflammatory, but blaming his fast riding it on Strava is fine?
I’m not blaming it on Strava. Just agree with Bike Snob that most of us could benefit from going without it for a few days.
I use Strava to keep track of miles on both bikes and miles on various parts on my bikes. That’s really all I use it for, though I do try to get a PR here and there.
Also a witness at the scene said the cyclist had the light and the woman acted like she was just standing there oblivious in the crosswalk. And the speed figure I heard was 22, not in excess of the 25 mph limit.
Agreed, nowhere in any if he links did it suggest he was traveling faster than 25 mph. I don’t disagree you should slow down around pedestrians, but your reporting here places more blame than the reported facts seem to allow. Also, strava is a tool that encourages some to ride fast. So are aerobars, carbon frames, Lycra, and disc wheels, should we ban all of those for the weekend too?
When I linked to the stories, the Post story said that he was riding above the 25 mph speed limit; however, that has since been removed and now simply quotes a witness as saying he was speeding. I have edited my comments to reflect that.
I have seen nothing to say the victim was crossing against the light; the Daily News story simply says investigators are unsure who had the right of way. Regardless, the cyclist was riding at speed through a crowded crosswalk, where prudence would have dictated slowing down, rather than screaming at pedestrians to get out of the way.
And I do confess my bias is to have little sympathy for cyclists who injure pedestrians, just as I have little sympathy for drivers who injure cyclists. Yes, we’ve all been in situations where people have done stupid things like stepping out in front of a moving bike. But a safe rider will anticipate things like that and slow down around pedestrians and at crosswalks where they may be present. We all have an obligation to look out for others, especially those more vulnerable than ourselves.
As for Strava, nowhere have I suggested banning it, nor anything else. Admittedly, I am not a fan of Strava; while it can be a useful tool, there is too much potential for abuse that can put others at risk, as well as an over dependence that can suck the joy out of a simple ride.
My suggestion is simply to unplug and enjoy your ride. If you choose not to, that is your business.
