Alleged San Diego hit-and-run driver pleads not guilty, and more on NIMBY Koretz killing Melrose project

Twentynine-year old Mauricio Flores pled not guilty to felony hit-and-run in San Diego on Monday.

Flores is the minivan driver who allegedly slammed into a 66-year old bike rider near the city’s airport last month, leaving the victim with a life-threatening head injury.

In actions captured on video, he allegedly got out of his van, along with a passenger identified as 50-year old Jessica Bailey, examined the victim lying in the roadway, then calmly removed his bike from under their van and drove away.

They were captured in Kern County less than two weeks later.

There’s no word on whether Bailey is in custody, or if she will face any charges.

And no word on the identity or condition of the victim.

Just after the Mid City West meeting, the NIMBYs sprang into action. They viewed Uplift Melrose as a threat to the sacred space of vehicles in this city, and were outraged that a project would even be considered that would rellocate space from cars for a bike lane. Those bike lane thieves, trying to take away sacred car space! And while the project was so much more than a bike lane — it was wider sidewalks, new trees, raised crosswalks, new lighting… all they could see was the bike lane.

Jim O’Sullivan, co-founder of Fix The City — a litigious organization that sues over nearly every bike lane and high density housing project using money from questionable funding sources — started sending threatening emails to Councilmember Koretz and eventually to the entire city council. They also posted misinformation on Next Door. When NIMBYs can’t win on the merits of something, then they simply resort to the tired and true “there wasn’t enough outreach” argument.

It’s worth taking a few minutes — okay, nine, according to the article — to read the whole thing.

Because this is what we’re up against.

And what we will continue to confront — and too often, lose — as long as we continue to elect regressive leaders in environmentalist sheep’s clothing.

Something is seriously wrong when the person charged with enforcing a state’s laws doesn’t obey them himself.

South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg killed a man riding his bike Saturday night, then continued driving home without bothering to stop, later claiming he thought he’d hit a deer.

An excuse used by countless other hit-and-run drivers, in a usually failed attempt to avoid responsibility for their crimes.

It remains to be seen whether Ravnsborg, who has a long record of speeding and other traffic violations, will be held accountable. Or if his position will shield him from blame.

Although it doesn’t bode well that the state’s Department of Public Safety is withholding key details of the investigation.

Ravnsborg was reportedly driving home from a Republican fundraising dinner, where he swears he didn’t drink.

Even though any rational and sober person would stop to see what they hit after an impact like that.


Still more proof you can literally carry anything on a bicycle.


The war on cars may be a myth, but the war on bikes just keeps on going.

    Hi Ted, long time reader, love your content and advocacy work.

    I’m a melrose Ave adjacent resident and when I saw this project I was delighted. Expanding sidewalks, adding tree canopy, safer crossings and curb bulblouts all point in the direction of a much nicer street to walk along. The bike lane stuff is nice, but isnt as much of a priority in my personal opinion, and given the way the Fairfax Ave bikelanes remain completely under utilized, I’m not certain they would provide much short term benefit (their role in a wider network of lanes and the benefits that would provide are more long term goal planning), but I digress.

    The project would remove parking – that’s not ideal (the majority of melrose Ave shoppers are from far away – mostly south LA and the valley) – it’s not casual shoppers from nearby, and given the pandemic, and destructive rioting and looting that occured at the end of May, the remaining shops that are still viable are ones that attract visitors from non adjacent communities – parking is essential, at least in the short term. I’d like to see some vacant corner lots raised and turned into car parks, and for the road space to be dedicated to the passage of people – cars, bikes, buses. Theres a lot of boarded up and underutilized storefronts there currently.

    Then theres the problem of the project reducing traffic to two lanes, one each way – this is far more problematic. Currently, traffic is slowed by people making illegal (during rush hour) left turns, and ubers/shoppers double parking blocking a traffic lanes, particularly at Coolkicks, and Shoe Palace. This isnt legal or desirable but it happens frequently and ignoring it is plain old retarded. Now, the project would have banned left turns altogether – I thought a center turn lane would have been a smart compromise but eliminating them without physically blocking the center of the roadway is wishful thinking and/or moronic – people would be attempting them on every block, and with the increased foot traffic (ideally, a project success metric) then the ability to make legal right turns would be hindered also – there would be logjam – for the best part of two miles. The police and fire service have every right (as do local residents who might rely on their timely responses) to be concerned here.

    We can pretend all day about how idealized and model citizens behave in hypothetical scenarios but we all know the project was fatally flawed – the people castigating Koretz (who’s a putz, I’m not a fan) for dinging this project have their heads up their ass – they’re knee jerking and have no idea about the local conditions and typical behaviors – it’s a busy street and imperfect – there are plenty of things to improve in terms of sidewalk trees, and better conditions for road users of all mobility, but this wasnt it. And the outreach was non existent – all my neighbors were against it having seen only the final configuration, and for a variety of different reasons – they want and have every interest into seeing their community improved and support investment but not at the cost of impaired city essential services, and the externalities of a gross increase in reckless side street driving (it already happens on Saturdays and Sundays now – there were no plans for any mitigation).

    Come up with better plans, do better community outreach, listen to the locals – it’s not a big ask.

    FWIW I read the linked article and I, a well informed and interested local party and homeowner who’s invested in the long term health and future of the community only found out about this at the flyer stage when all the configurations had been eliminated and the selected one put forward – it was this or nothing. Idiots. Hope they do better next time

      I appreciate the feedback, and you raise some interesting arguments. However, you are off base on a few of key points. As proposed, this project would have removed some street parking, but would have resulted in an net increase in parking, while traffic impacts, both on Melrose and in the surrounding community, could have been mitigated. And rather than this being the final design, this was killed at the very beginning of the public process, and literally everything about it was negotiable.

      No one says you have to like it, and no one, to my knowledge, is trying to force anything on local homeowners. Least of all me. But with California literally in flames, we have no choice but to take steps to reduce automobile traffic and provide viable alternatives to driving, and reducing road capacity is one of the most effective tools to accomplish that. It’s something that has worked very effectively in cities around the world, without the disastrous traffic impacts that opponents have feared.

    As a cyclist and native Angelino, the Melrose Project would be a welcome change, however, I can understand the concerns of the LAPD. In addition, the position of the bike lane with pedestrian traffic crossing it and the growth of eBikes could make for a dangerous situation. I think it would be much better to have a dedicated bicycle lane one block south and north, with real markings, signs, speed bumps, etc and get the bicycle traffic off Melrose all together
