East LA bike rider suffers serious injuries as driver runs away, and arraignment postponed for OC e-motorcycle mom

A bike rider suffered serious injuries in an East LA collision Monday night, as a driver hit multiple vehicles as well as the victim’s bike.

The driver fled the scene on foot afterwards, literally running away.

The crash occurred at 10:30 pm in the 5300 block of Whittier Blvd, near Amalia Ave.

A photo taken after the crash shows the victim’s mangled bike resting on the curb, with the seat and handlebars snapped off the frame.

There’s no description of the victim or the suspect at this time.

Unfortunately, this occurred outside the City of Los Angeles in LA County, so the city’s standing hit-and-run reward doesn’t apply.

An Aliso Viejo mom’s arraignment was postponed until next month, as she made her first court appearance yesterday.

Tommi Jo Mejer is charged with involuntary manslaughter, with prosecutors attempting to hold her responsible for her 14-year-old son crashing his illegal e-moto into an 81-year old man in Lake Forest last month.

Vietnam vet Ed Ashman died two weeks after he was struck on April 16th.

Prosecutors allege the 51-year old mother was repeatedly warned by police that her son was riding his illegal Surron e-motorcycle in a dangerously irresponsible manner.

He was reportedly popping wheelies when he crashed into Ashman, then fled the scene afterwards.

According to ABC-7,

“We have her on body-worn camera talking about and understanding the dangers and the illegality of this particular vehicle,” Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a recent interview with Eyewitness News. “I’m charging the mother because she provided the motorcycle, she was aware of it, she was warned on a prior occasion that this was a dangerous vehicle that her son could not legally possess, and certainly couldn’t ride. And, irrespective of those admonitions and warnings, she continued to allow him to do so.”

Mejer faces additional felony counts of child endangerment and being an accessory after the fact, along with misdemeanor charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and providing false information to a peace officer, as well as an infraction for permitting an unlicensed minor to drive a motor vehicle.

She faces a maximum sentence of seven years and eight months in state prison if convicted on all counts. There’s no word on what charges her minor son may face, if any.

Mejer was released on $100,000 bond, with her arraignment rescheduled for June 30th.

A crowdfunding campaign to help pay Ashman’s medical expenses has raised over $120,000.

The war on cars may be a myth, but the war on bikes just keeps on going.

A longtime Glendale resident complains about bike lanes on La Crescenta Ave, hitting nearly every note in the standard roster of bike lane complaints, from the bike lanes are empty to the majority of residents oppose them. Which actually translates to some of the people he knows opposes them, unless he somehow took a poll of all the city’s residents, or at least everyone he knows.

An English city spent the equivalent of $3.65 million to rip out a bike lane they already spent the equivalent of $2.3 million to build — which means they spent nearly $6 million building and removing it, but at least traffic is “running smoothly” now. Apparently unlike whatever it was doing before all that.

But sometimes, it’s the people on two wheels behaving badly.

The mayor of Girona, Spain ordered the police to investigate video of a bicyclist riding down the 400-year old stairs of the Pujada de Sant Domènec, one of the most recognizable points of the Old City, complaining that some bike tourists “disdain the city’s heritage and use it to show off.” Seriously, don’t do that.

This is who we share the road with. The victim of last week’s e-moto crash in Garden Grove has been identified as a 13-year old Garden Grove boy; he was riding a non-street legal electric dirt bike when he hit the center divider at 35 mph, while wearing a regular bike helmet instead of a motorcycle helmet. Never mind that he couldn’t legally ride the bike to begin with.

Good question. A local San Francisco website examines the candidates for the city’s 2nd Supervisor District, asking them “Where should bike lanes go?”.

Good news and bad on CA ebike bills, and OC mom charged after son on illegal e-moto injured 81-year old Vietnam vet

Good news and bad from the state legislature with regard to ebikes.

Let’s start with the good news.

AB 1557, which redefines an ebike as having a motor limited to maximum of 750 watts, and lowers the maximum assisted speed for Class 1 and Class 2 ebikes to 16 mph, passed out of the Assembly Transportation Committee 12-0; the purpose is to clearly distinguish ebikes from e-motos of questionable legality.

AB 2284 passed the committee with 15 votes in favor; it would require the state Attorney General to maintain a public list of electric two-wheeled devices that don’t meet the state’s legal definition of an ebike.

Now for the bad news.

AB 1942 also passed the committee, and would mandate that all Class 2 and Class 3 ebikes have to be registered with the DMV and display license plates, just like cars, trucks and SUVs. It would be one of the most effective ways to put the brakes on ebikes, limit the growth of an otherwise legal alternative to driving, and start us down the slippery slope that could lead to licensing regular bikes and their riders.

Somewhere in between good and bad, and also moving forward, are AB 1569, which requires students from kindergarten up to complete an approved electric bicycle safety training course before they could park an ebike on school grounds, and AB 2595, which creates a pilot program allowing cities in San Mateo County to ban kids under 12 from riding any form of ebike.

She is accused of lying to investigators about after the crash, claiming neither she nor her son owned a similar e-moto.

County officials in Ireland are urging the country’s government to reconsider a plan for mandatory hi-visibility clothing at night for bicyclists and e-scooter users, even though the initial plan to require hi-viz collapsed within a day from a withering backlash; then again, they’re also calling for pedestrians to wear hi-viz when walking 24/7. Update: Driver arrested after bike rider killed in Aliso Viejo hit-and-run

Sometimes I don’t know whether to scream or cry.

A man died this morning after he was run down by a cowardly driver in Aliso Viejo.

And sadly, his wife learned about it when she drove up to the crash scene.

According to the Orange County Register, the victim, publicly identified only as a man in his 50s, was run down by a driver around 6:40 this morning at Wood Canyon Drive and Westridge Drive in Aliso Viejo.

He died after being taken to a nearby hospital.

The driver fled the scene, but was arrested about a mile away in Aliso Viejo around 8:30 am, based on witness descriptions of the vehicle.

KCBS-2 places the time of the crash as 6:30 am, and reports the victim was crossing the street when he was struck, but does not say which street he or the driver was on.

A witness provided first aid until paramedics arrived.

Judging by the video, it appears he may have been riding an ebike with multiple rear lights and reflectors, and was wearing hi-viz.

Sadly, his wife learned of her husband’s fatal injuries in the hardest way possible, by coming on the scene moments after the crash.

At least she may have been able to be with him in his final moments.

The cowardly driver who fled the seen is not suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Orange County Sheriff’s Department at 714/647-7000.

This is at least the fifth bicycling fatality in Southern California this year, and the second I’m aware of in Orange County.

Update: The victim has been identified as 51-year old Aliso Viejo resident Michael David Tomlinson.

Meanwhile, the driver has been identified as 38-year old Rogelio Martinez Cuin of Lake Forest; he’s being held on suspicion of felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter.

Update 2: KNBC-4 reports the driver has been charged in the crash.

Rogelio Martinez-Cuin faces one count each of gross vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run with permanent and serious injury, both felonies, as well as a misdemeanor count of driving on a suspended or revoked license due to a DUI, with a sentence-enhancing allegation of fleeing the scene of a vehicular manslaughter, according to court records.

The complaint against Martinez-Cuin alleges he ran a red light, was inattentive and was driving at an unsafe speed.

My deepest sympathy and prayers for Michael David Tomlinson and all his loved ones.

Thanks to Mike Wilkinson and Bill Sellin for the heads-up.
